Vande Mataram ( वन्दे मातरम् ) Lyrics - Natinal Song of India
Vande Mataram

Lyrics: Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Anandamath (1882)

Music: Hemanta Mukherjee, Jadunath Bhattacharya (the original composition was by Saraladevi Chowdhurani)

Adopted: 24 January 1950

About: Vande Mataram is a sonnet written in sanskritised Bengali by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee during the 1870s. In October 1937, the Congress made the poem's first two verses the country's national anthem.

As a part of Chatterjee's Bengali novel Anandmath, the poem was first published in 1882. It is an ode to the people's motherland, portrayed in later verses as the "mother goddess." Although the text does not explicitly mention this, this initially referred to Bengal, making Banga Mata (Mother Bengal) the "mother" figure. Vande Mataram was referred to by Indian nationalist and philosopher Sri Aurobindo as the "national Anthem of Bengal."

In any case, the sonnet assumed a crucial part in the Indian freedom development. When it was recited by Rabindranath Tagore at Congress in 1896, it first gained political traction. By 1905, it had turned into a famous among political activists and political dissidents as a walking tune. Under British colonial rule, the song and Anandmath were outlawed with the threat of imprisonment, making their use revolutionary. The Indian government eventually lifted the ban upon independence in 1947.

Vande Mataram was chosen by the Constituent Assembly of India as the Republic's national anthem on January 24, 1950. Rajendra Prasad, the president of India, said that the song should be honored in the same way as India's national anthem, Jana Gana Mana. The government filed an affidavit with the Delhi High Court in November 2022 stating that Jana Gana Mana and Vande Mataram would "stand on the same level" and that citizens should show equal respect to both, despite the fact that the Indian Constitution does not mention a "national song."

The "mother" and "motherland" are abstractly referred to in the first two verses of the song without any religious undertones. In any case, later stanzas notice Hindu goddesses like Durga.

When reciting Vande Mataram, unlike the national anthem, there are no rules or rules of decorum.
